I’ve been using olive oil lately as my facial moisturizer - SO much cheaper than the Mary Kay variety I used to use, all natural, and it works just as well. I ordered some coconut oil (because it smells better) and plan to mix that with some shea butter to use as moisturizer and body lotion. So…I’ve been a slacker when it comes to blogging lately… and I’ve also been a slacker when it comes to saving money. It’s easy to get lax about sticking to the budget during the holidays, but NO MORE! As of Jan 1 of 2011, we’re getting legalistic about this stuff! When we ran out of “out to eat” money this month, we stopped eating out. It’s hard for me to say “no” especially when it comes to hanging out with friends. When someone says “Hey do you want to go to Paradise Bakery and grab a cup of coffee and a cookie?” It’s lame and embarrassing to say “You know, I really shouldn’t because I can’t afford it.” It’s much easier to go, charge it to the credit card, and let tomorrow’s financial woes take care of themselves… BUT I’m not going to do that any more. No way, no how. Debt is slavery and I already have enough student debt to keep me enslaved for a lifetime. Why add more willingly when I can just learn to say no?

I have started to notice that Americans eat ALL THE TIME … and social gatherings often center around food. It’s like we can’t get together without having something to eat. Don’t get me wrong - I LOVE food. But eating out is really expensive, and I honestly can’t maintain that kind of lifestyle. So if staying in budget means being a loser for a while, that’s what I’m going to be. If you care to join me, I’ll be at the park eating a peanut butter sandwich ;)

The Giveaway Experiment - Update

So here’s the deal, I’m WAY behind on my giveaway experiment. My goal was to enter 4 per day, but I didn’t anticipate how much time it would take to find them, enter them, post about them, and track them. There’s no way I’m going to catch up for all the days I’ve missed, but I’m going to give you an update on the stats so far:

I’ve entered about 40+ giveaways.
I’ve won 3 giveaways (charm bracelet, needlework, and Kroger savings game)
I haven’t won 31 giveaways
I’m still waiting to hear back on 2 giveaways (audiobooks from Day 9, Amazon kindle from Day 4)
3 giveaways are still open (Day 4 #4, Day 1 #3, and #3 on this post)
I play the Walgreen’s Instant win game every day. I’m still hoping to win one of these days

In other words, my success rate so far is about 9%. I was only expecting about 5%, so I’m pleasantly surprised with that!

What I’ve learned:

Entering giveaways is more time-consuming than I imagined
Winning free stuff only saves you money if you only enter for items you would have purchased anyway.
It’s tacky to re-sell an item won in a giveaway, so if you end up winning an item you didn’t really want in the first place, there isn’t much you can do with it, apart from re-gifting it. (My husband enjoyed the free Coke Zero I won, I will be enjoying the Fuze, the Lookin Good Needlwork will be hung in my guest bathroom, and I still have no idea what I’m going to do with the charm bracelet - maybe give it to my grandma).

My Verdict: I’m going to finish out The Giveaway Experiment by entering as many as I can before the end of the month. Then I’m taking a break from giveaways. I don’t have time to keep up a quota. After October, I’ll only enter giveaways that are fun, have a low entry count and are for items that I either need or really really want.
